How to select the right centrifugal fan
These are the external rotor centrifugal fans used for canopy cooling and ducted ventilation on screw compressors. The model number carries the impeller size; the letter after the size is the voltage and speed code.
- Range — YWFF 200, 225, 250, 280, 315, 355, 400 and 450, with air flow from about 1300 to 8100 m³/h.
- Voltage — the E models are single phase 230 V with a capacitor; the D models are Δ230 V / Y400 V three phase, so they can be connected to either supply.
- Speed — the 4-pole versions run around 1300–1400 rpm, the 6-pole versions around 900 rpm at lower noise and lower flow.
- Noise — 50–83 dB(A) depending on size and speed; if the machine has a noise limit, take the 6-pole version and a larger impeller rather than running a small 4-pole fan fast.
Installation and maintenance
- Fit the fan so that it pulls air through the cooler and pushes it out of the canopy — reversing it cuts the airflow by roughly a third.
- Leave the clearance the drawing gives around the impeller; a fan pressed against a panel stalls and the motor then runs hot.
- On single-phase models the capacitor is part of the circuit — a fan that hums and does not start is usually the capacitor, not the motor.
- Check the rotation direction before the canopy goes back on; three-phase fans run backwards on two of three wiring combinations.
Centrifugal fan FAQ
How do I choose between a 4-pole and a 6-pole fan?
By noise and by the pressure the duct needs. The 4-pole fan moves more air for its size but is louder; the 6-pole version is quieter and is the usual choice for a machine installed near people.
Can I replace a 380 V fan with the D model?
Yes — the D models are Δ230 V / Y400 V, so they connect to a 380–400 V three-phase supply in star. Check the terminal link position before switching on.
The fan runs but the machine still overheats. Is the fan undersized?
Usually the air path is the problem, not the fan. Check the cooler fins, the intake louvres and the recirculation inside the canopy before fitting a bigger fan.
