How to select the right Hanbell two-stage airend

Two-stage airends split the compression into two rotors sets with intercooling between them, which is why the specific power is lower than a single-stage machine at the same pressure. The two families on this page cover different jobs:

  • AA series (AAD-) — 17–35 bar, 10–30 m³/min, 37–250 kW. Used for PET blowing, laser cutting, bottle blowing and other high-pressure duties.
  • AB series (AB-) — 6–16 bar, 6–60 m³/min, 37–315 kW. The general-purpose range for 8 and 10 bar plant air.
  • Selection — pick the model from the flow at your working pressure, then check the shaft power at that point. Every model is listed at several pressures because flow falls as pressure rises.
  • Gear ratio — each model has a fixed gear ratio and rotor speed; the flow and the shaft power in the table belong to that combination.

Installation and maintenance

  • Never change the pulley or the coupling ratio to “get more air” — the rotor speed and the bearing load are matched, and overspeeding is the fastest way to destroy an airend.
  • Align the coupling to the tolerance of the airend supplier and re-check after the first 100 hours; misalignment shows up first as a vibration at the coupling end.
  • Keep the oil flow and the oil temperature in range: a two-stage airend rejects more heat per cubic metre, so a marginal cooler that works on a single-stage machine will not cope here.
  • Start unloaded, and let the machine run at minimum pressure for a few minutes before loading, especially below 10 °C ambient.

Hanbell two-stage airend FAQ

Because the intercooling between the two stages removes heat that would otherwise be wasted in compressing already hot air. At 8–10 bar the saving is typically 10–15 % of specific power; at 30 bar the difference is much larger.

17–35 bar, with flow from 10 to 30 m³/min and shaft power from 37 to 250 kW depending on the model and the pressure point.

Both. The airend is available as a bare unit for OEM assembly, and we also build complete machines around it. Tell us the pressure and the flow you need and we will propose the model.
